Here comes our new Head of Deployment! We proudly present Ivan Martinez Fayos, who will help Quibim’s innovation to better fit into clinical practice and advance personalized medicine.

Going back to the origin of technology to boost human health

A superior technician in computer systems administration, Ivan graduated in computer engineering and majored in software engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in 2015.

After 15 years piloting IT systems at Quironsalud, the biggest hospital group in Spain, he’s developed a keen understanding of clinicians’ needs and refined his skills in IT systems management.

I’m a hybrid profile,” he says. “I’m an IT specialist, but also very much focused on the final product.”

As IT Systems Director of Quiron’ HQS Valencia and Regional Director of Levante and Canarias, Ivan was in charge of managing and seeing IT and digital transformation projects through.

His focus has been on simplifying clinical workflow to improve quality of care and patient experience. He’s notably developed a tool to expedite workflow and reduce patient waiting times in the emergency room at Quiron Valencia. The output is a patient dashboard that shows with flashing colors which exam is being performed and when, enabling clinicians to better follow patient’s journey in the ER.

There was this huge inefficiency and time loss,” he recalls. “Referring physicians were losing time going from the clinical file, to write their reports, back to the PACS, to consult the images. Clinicians ordered a test but didn’t realize it had been done for a long time. As a result, patients had to wait an average 2 hours before receiving emergency care.

With the dashboard, Ivan and his team have helped reduce patient waiting times by 40 minutes. The solution was rapidly installed at other hospitals in Mediterranean Spain and the Canary Islands.

Developing solutions hand-in-hand with clinicians

Success doesn’t only depend on development, but also on implementation and who’s involved in the process, he believes.

We often make the mistake of not including clinicians in our creations. Us technicians need to try and speak the same language as doctors. If we’re too technical, they may not understand us.

Ivan has worked on solutions that improve workflows with radiologists, cardiologists and traumatologists. For the latter, he’s developed an algorithm to optimize time in the operating room and help prioritize interventions using the data from all the tools available in the OR.

He has also worked extensively with pediatricians on wearable wristbands to remotely monitor children with bronchiolitis.

These cases may not require hospitalization, but you can’t send patients and their parents back home without any monitoring,” says this father of two. “If anything goes wrong, an alert is sent, and patients can be admitted to the hospital anytime. Meanwhile, remote monitoring and consultations enable the family to stay comfortably at home.

The tool has been widely accepted and implemented into the hospital’s clinical record, and it was soon transferred from Valencia headquarters to other hospitals across the country.

Ivan has also led a project to boost immediate consultation, as part of Quiron’s digital hospital scheme. The solution helped to redirect clinical activity around 40% during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Going back to the roots

At Quibim, he wants to go back to the origin of technology to truly advance healthcare.

I like that Quibim goes in-depth with AI, big data and computing techniques. This will definitely improve workflows.

Ivan sunk his teeth into AI when working with Quibim almost a decade ago. As he saw the potential of the technology, he also discovered the great team behind the wheel. “Our AI modules are excellent and our medical imaging experts unmatched. Our founders are eminencies in their field. The best teachers make the best students.

Quibim’s solutions will increasingly make sense for hospitals with the trend toward preventive and precision medicine, he believes. “We’re ahead of the competition and at the forefront of clinical research and innovation. Our QP-Prostate solution is landing in the United States, where hospitals mainly use cloud-based infrastructures that simplify, optimize and facilitate the integration and processing of data. The US is 7-8 years ahead of us, but Europe will get there.

In the future, he envisions hospitals without walls that can provide the best treatments, even before patients are sick. “Ideally scanners at the airport could provide diagnosis, with the proper algorithm. What a better way to go than Quibim’s whole-body approach then.
